Bible Study: Elijah and the Cloud

The story of Elijah is one that has fascinated people for centuries. This biblical figure was known for his incredible feats, including calling down fire from heaven and ascending to the heavens alive. But who was Elijah, and what significance does he hold in different faiths?

According to accounts in all three Synoptic Gospels, Elijah appeared alongside Moses during Jesus' Transfiguration. In Islam, Elijah is recognized as a prophet and messenger of God, with his biblical narrative of preaching against Baal worship recounted in the Quran.

Interestingly, some people believed that Jesus was, in some sense, Elijah, but the Christian New Testament makes it clear that John the Baptist was 'the Elijah' who was promised to come. Jewish interpretations also suggest that Elijah will return during the End of Times.

God performed many miracles through Elijah, including resurrection, bringing fire down from the sky, and entering heaven alive 'by fire.'

Elijah is also portrayed as leading a school of prophets known as 'the sons of the prophets,' which was later taken over by his disciple Elisha after his ascension. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah defended the worship of the Hebrew God against that of Canaanite deity Baal.
