DSM-5 Definition and Criteria for PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that affects individuals who have experienced a traumatic event or multiple traumatic occurrences. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), provides specific criteria for diagnosing PTSD.

One of the primary diagnostic criteria is that the symptoms of PTSD are caused by a traumatic event or multiple traumatic occurrences. This can include events such as combat, physical assault, natural disasters, or sexual violence. In order to meet the criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD, an individual must experience at least one of the following symptoms:

* Disturbance: The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in relationships with others or with daily functioning.

* Duration: The duration of the disturbance is more than 1 month.

* Symptoms: Two or more of the following symptoms must be present:

+ Hypervigilance: Being constantly on guard and alert, even when not in danger.

+ Increased startle response: Easily startled by loud noises or other unexpected events.

+ Difficulty sleeping: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep due to nightmares or other symptoms of PTSD.

* Avoidance: Avoiding people, places, or activities that remind an individual of the traumatic event.

* Cognitions and mood: One or more of the following symptoms must be present:

+ Negative alterations in cognitions: Having negative thoughts about oneself, others, or the world.

+ Markedly diminished interest in activities: Losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable.

+ Substantially increased frequency of negative emotional states: Experiencing intense feelings of fear, guilt, sadness, shame, or confusion.

In addition to these symptoms, individuals with PTSD may also experience:

* Irritable behavior and angry outbursts: Easily becoming irritable or aggressive due to the trauma.

* Sleep disturbance: Difficulty sleeping or experiencing nightmares due to the trauma.

* Alterations in arousal and reactivity: Feeling constantly 'on edge' or easily irritated due to the trauma.
